The Greater Houston Garifuna-American Partnership, is a community organization in Harris County Texas dedicated to promote and advocate the preservation of Garifuna culture, music and history in the state of Texas and the United States.

The Greater Houston Garifuna-American Partnership is a community, advocacy organization in Harris County TX dedicated to promote, advocate and highlight the contributions of the Garifuna-American community to the city of Houston, Harris County, state of Texas and United States of America. Established in 2009, the Greater Houston Garifuna-American Partnership has served as the voice of the Garifuna-American community in the gulf coast by promoting Garifuna culture and establishing important relationships with the local community organization, clergy, elected officials and small businesses.
Through its creation, the organizations have been organizing cultural events and have participated in Houston’s elite community festivals that include: Ifest, Caribfest, Dominican Republic Independence Festivals, Honduran Festival and Fiestas Patrias. In addition though the organization, the Garifuna communities have participated in the Martin Luther King Day Parade and Alief Community Parade.
Events organized by the Greater Houston Garifuna-American Partnership have been featured in Houston’s local media that includes: Houston Chronicle, UNIVISION 45, TELEFUTURA 67, One Love Caribbean Newspaper, CAHFT TV Media and Newsletter.
SUCCESFUL ADVOCACY OF THE GREATER HOUSTON GARIFUNA-AMERICAN PARTNERSHIP:*Proclamation of November 19 to November 26 as “Garifuna Settlement Week in the City of Houston” in 2009.
· Proclamation of December 2 as “Andy Palacio Day in Honor of the late Garifuna Music Legend, Andy Palacio in 2009.
· Proclaimed April 12 as “Garifuna Heritage and Survival Day in the city of Houston in 2010.
· Received a Certificate of Congressional Recognition for the 213th Anniversary cof Garifuna Heritage and Survival Day from United States House of Representative Sheila Jackson Lee
· Received a Proclamation from Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis in Honor of Garifuna Settlement, Education and Awareness Month in November 2010.
· Received a Certificate of Congressional Recognition from United States House of Representative Al Green in November 2010.
· Received a Certificate of Congressional Recognition from United States House of Representative Sheila Jackson Lee in November 2010.
· Successfully advocated the proclamation of November 19 to the 26 as New Orleans Garifuna Settlement Week in November 2010.
· Received a Certificate of Congressional Recognition from former United States House of Representative in Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional District Ahn Joseph Cao
· Successfully advocated Houston’s Mayor’s Office to proclaim March 14 to April 12 as Garifuna Heritage and Survival Month in the City of Houston.
· Successfully advocated United States Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison to write a congratulatory letter about Garifuna preservation in the state of Texas.
· Successfully advocated Texas House of Representative Alma Allen and California Assembly Speaker John Perez to issue Commemorative Recognitions in honor of UNESCO Garifuna 10th Year Anniversary.
